October 1, 2002

I have an XML news Feed (sort of). Here's another .

A book review of mine recently appeared on Slashdot.

Links Pages: Security Links , Houston Links and Postnuke . I've also started the processing of transferring my literary essays onto the net.

Why do all job ads for IT require "at least 5 years experience." Here's an article I wrote about that

August 10, 2002

Because I moved to Houston, I haven't written much of note recently. But I have added content to my book reviews of technical books as well as a list of what I'm reading now.

Most recently I've finished a 5 part essay on Web Communities and the Art of Making Money. It addresses the perennial question of how low budget content/community sites can make money (if at all).

I've finally explained why I call the website "idiotprogrammer"

I've been changing my attitude toward weblogs in the last two weeks. In my June 13 entry, I write: Weblogs serve as rough draft repositories. I usually will start a rant or commentary on a weblog only to later transfer it to a static page, substituting the original entry with a link to the static page. In other words, the better the content, the more likely that it will be removed from my weblog. What conclusion should you reach about the content which is still here?"

Indeed, I have been trying to convert weblog entries and old essays into content on idiotprogrammer. I have sections for my computer articles, Professional articles , and instructional articles

Most of these articles weren't really new material, so I won't mention them individually. I did however polish most of them up before releasing them to the wild.

In the next month, I should have postnuke content management system up and running. I installed it last week and experienced some minor problems.

Last month for the heck of it I tried advertising my Asiafirst site on metafilter, a well known community site. For $20/20,000 adviews, I got 153 clickthroughs (.77) and about 10 mentions by other websites. I wrote about the business of adviews in my web community article above. Prices are getting really cheap for any kind of advertising these days. In comparison, I emailed owners of small Asian index site and signed up for a webring. That proved to be just as effective.

If you see typos, design problems or bad links, please let me know. My site is still rather new, and I would appreciate any help finding these errors.

This site contains much of my static content. It is approximately 50% complete. I'm in the middle of converting content, setting up a CMS, writing two weblogs, studying for a Linux certification, and oh, yes, looking for job. Right now I have converted about 20 articles on the Instructional, Computers , Professional and About section.

Most recently I have been doing work on a cultural weblog. Asiafirst contains essays in English about contemporary art and culture of India and China, with a special focus on high-quality writing. It is updated once or twice or week, with entries alternating between India and China.

I disabled the phpBB bulletin board for the time being. This site will incorporate some mechanism for capturing comments, but I'm focusing first on deploying a portal site like Postnuke . On the good side, I've found a commercial host for my other site www.imaginaryplanet.net . That should result in more stable url's and better search results on google. Actually, plans are to deploy postnuke on idiotprogrammer first, transfer it to imaginaryplanet (where it serve the main content) and then to deploy zope on idiotprogrammer.com. I'm sorry to bore you with these details, but I thought this would give an idea about where future content is likely to be.
